Article title: Disney faces backlash over LGBTQ controversy: ‘It’s just pure nonsense’

Article source: The guardian

Article date: 21 March 2022

Article URL: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/mar/21/disney-faces-backlash-lgbtq-controversy-dont-say-gay-bill-florida

My critical questions:

As I reread the article,  I really wonder about "How often do they report? Do they have an update or follow up?". by this question it makes me want to know that the journalists got any updated from the call out group? did the Disney make any announcement for protect them and did the Florida bill have been amended as they demanded? I knew that they have to live there with suspicion and there is nothing in the law to protects them, must be careful in every action, afraid or being hurt by people who hate them.           I notice that the journalist didn't take action much about this article, it just have a few report about this issue due to the fact that there is a political party involved, it is too difficult to report on this matter. Therefore, I think one of the key questions I want to ask about this article is," what is the key point of the new?,  is that Disney has received criticism and backlash from some conservative groups and individuals for featuring LGBTQ characters and themes in their movies and TV shows. Last but not least, I noticed that the media in the article is not capable of determining what you believe to be true or not, I was thinking about this question, "Does information in the news match what we think we believe to be true?", so I can provide information on the article that this is not the first time that Disney has faced controversy over LGBTQ represent in its media. I can't remember about the film name but I can imagined that there is feature a gay character, which sparked a similar backlash. It's vital to note that while some one may believe that Disney's inclusion of LGBTQ characters or themes is inappropriate for children's media. others argue that it's necessary for represent. However this article is really important for media outlets to provide comprehensive and accurate coverage of controversial issues, particularly those related to social justice and human rights.

The Children of the Iraq War Have Grown Up, but Some Wounds Don't Heal

Article title: The Children of the Iraq War Have Grown Up, but Some Wounds Don't Heal

Source: The New York Times

Date: 20 March 2023

URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/20/world/middleeast/iraq-war-anniversary-youth.html

Summary:

The Iraq War, which began in 2003 and lasted for nearly decade, had a profound impact on the lives of many children in Iraq. Many of these children experienced trauma, loss, and displacement as a result of the conflict. Now, as they have grown up, some continue to struggle with the emotional and psychological scars left by the war.

One of the most significant impacts of the war on children was the disruption of their education. Schools were often damaged or destroyed during the conflict, and many children were forced to flee their homes and communities. As a result, many Iraq children missed out on years of schooling, which has had long-term consequences for their future prospects.

Some of the long-term effects of the Iraq War on children include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and other mental health issues.

Overall, the Iraq War continues to impact the lives of many children who lived through it. While some have been able to overcome their trauma and build successful lives, others continue to struggle with the lasting effects of this conflict.

Reaction:

After reading the article carefully, I came to understand the feelings of the Iraqis at war, how much they suffer and lose everything in the blink of an eye. Not only did they lose, but they also suffered psychological consequences. They even lose their loved ones and lost important organs such as arms, legs, and eyes, which caused them to miss out on many opportunities in their lives whether they failed to complete their studies or something else. If something like this happened to me and in my country, I think I wouldn't be able to handle it because it's too cruel for one person to face such things. so we know that the war is not the best answer to bring freedom or that establish any independence, it is only cruel and the result after the war is not able to improve many things.

Question:

I wonder if the journalist who covers this story has called on the Government aid or not?

Have those affected by the war been healed? If so, from whom and what agency did they receive?

Would writing news like this not affect the minds of generations that have hate or not?

Disney faces backlash over LGBTQ controversy: ‘It’s just pure nonsense’

Article title: Disney faces backlash over LGBTQ controversy: ‘It’s just pure nonsense’

Source: The Guardian

Date: 21 March 2022

URL: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/mar/21/disney-faces-backlash-lgbtq-controversy-dont-say-gay-bill-florida

Summary:

This article can be summed up in several points:

Disney typically has not gotten involved in lots of controversial social issues. They are just media giants doing business in order to be more successful. Disney company's one of the world’s biggest media and entertainment empires, prides itself on a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) friendly culture.

・Next up was Florida's bill, '' Don't say gay'' a controversial bill on sexual orientation or gender identity that has been taught since kindergarten through third grade.

・Later, more protests from Disney workers erupted against the Florida bill, and Disney didn't seem to come out in defense of them, which made them think they would. It's not safe to work in a place where the law doesn't support them.

It was tone deaf response, misjudging the mood of an era in which companies face heightened ethical expectations to take a stand on issues such as Black Lives Matter. Although they sent messages to Disney employees confirming that the company supports the LGBTQ rights, they argued that corporate statements were often ineffective.

・The governments of each party have their own arguments, especially the Republican and the Democrats. Republicans are less supportive of LGBTQ claims, unlike Democrats, they stand alongside these group to perform that stand on equality.

The employee protests will culminate with a general walkout by LGBTQ workers and their supporters at Disney worksites. the Human Rights Campaign has said it will stop accepting money from Disney “until we see them build on their public commitment and work with LGBTQ+ advocates to ensure that dangerous proposals, like Florida’s ‘don’t say gay or trans’ bill, don’t become dangerous laws”.

Reaction:

Personally, I think there is a solution to these problems, which is to understand and accept each other's differences. Whether you have a different identity, appearance, or gender, you deserve to be equal with everyone else. Wherever you are in the world, what we all deserve is equal treatment that doesn't differ from anyone, even if we ourselves are different from everyone else. In my view, it would be a good idea to go to the media and ask them to help campaign for equality of human rights. But if there is politics to intervene, I think it will be a huge matter and the interests of politics into the shadows.

Question:

How do you think these problems would be solved if they happened in your community?

- If many of you don't accept differences or don't understand individual rights, will that cause bigger problems?

Can We Really Measure Implicit Bias? Maybe Not

Article title: " Can We Really Measure Implicit Bias? Maybe Not "

Source: The Chronicle Review

Date: 05 January 2017

URL: https://www.chronicle.com/article/can-we-really-measure-implicit-bias-maybe-not/

Summary: After reading this article, I can be more understand about 2 issues as follows:

・The first was a project implicit that tested a large number of people to find and assess those taking the IAT test for the presence of implicit bias. The IAT test is about revealing our implicit bias by bringing what we are familiar with that we have seen in our daily lives, let us answer as quickly as possible and evaluate the results of how many mistakes that we got on the test. From the results of the researcher's survey, they discovered that if we have implied bias can lead us to discriminatory behavior. They also concluded that there is little evidence that change in implicit bias is associated with change in a person's behavior.

・The second is the discussions between the researchers, which shows that each person's point of view is inconsistent and have different opinions, not quite agreeing with others. Banaji and Greenwald have aspirations to make society better and have spoken out about the IAT test that overall scores still cannot prove that people are implicitly biased. Everyone wanted to understand the reason for discrimination and these day still no one will be able to find the answer but hopefully there will be some progress on this problems. although there is little evidence to show that changing implicit bias is a useful way of changing those behaviors, so what should we do?

Reaction: Having done the IAT test, I felt that it was more of an experiment about reflection, intelligence and response than it was about our own bias. I think the test is something that we are more familiar, image memory with from what we see in daily life and media. For example: I did a test on Harmless Objects, Weapons and the result indicate that I got strong automatic association for Harmless Objects with White American, Weapons with Black American the result isn't surprising to me much, hence by I have memories from movies where Black are armed with weapons. It might be perceived as a bad image for them but I understand that's their acting role to make them look cool and powerful. Based on my own experience, I've met Black people and they've been very kind to me. I don't think what I did on the IAT test would create a bad memory for them and make me feel prejudiced. However, in order to have prejudice to anyone, when he/she has done bad things or doing somethings that affect to me if that person does not do anything that affects. Personally, I think I don't have any prejudice or negative thoughts about that person.

Question:

- If we are prejudiced against others, how do we manage our own feelings?

- What impact can implicit bias have on society? If the society we live in has implied bias, what should we do?

- In fact, this problem arises from ourselves or from society, how can we change our perspectives?

Body Shaming

Article title: "Body Shaming: What Is It & Why Do We Do It?"

Source: Walden Behavioral Care

Date: 3 February 2023

URL: https://www.waldeneatingdisorders.com/blog/body-shaming-what-is-it-why-do-we-do-it/

Summary: This source is presenting us with the knowledge of body shaming other people and it can occur anywhere in our society. what causes these things to happen?, all of this may be due to the physical appearance and mixed with imperfections. The indoctrination and memory of body shaming might come in the form of "Sitcoms" that feature actors with physical disabilities or overweight and make jokes with them. Not only this, media messages, images, memes can generate shame and comparisons, to always remind you to stay within the standards otherwise you may be the victims of body shaming. In addition, author also said "Body-shaming criticizing yourself or others because of some aspect of physical appearance can lead to a vicious cycle of judgment and criticism".

Reaction: In my opinion when others criticize appearance, dress up, personality and our outward appearance whether it's straightforward, compare or joking these words had a very detrimental effect on the body and mind of those being ridiculed. It is a form of bullying that causes the victim to lose self-esteem and could leading them to depression. In another view of me, it is not wrong to criticize, but we should keep in mind that what we say is not going to hurt other people's feelings. We can say good things by using the principle of choosing words to make society a better place.

Question (Base on group discussion):

○ When will the body shaming run out?

○ Dose everyone deserve body shaming?

○ If you see someone who has been affected by body shaming, what will you do?

Fake or Not?

Article title: Fake or not? Decoding the authenticity of online news

Source: What's New in Publishing

Date: September 2019

Summary: This article attempts us to convey different strategies and methods for creating fake news that could help us know the origin of fake news. allows us to understand the essence of the problem of creating fake news, there are two main factors in separating fake news: Misinformation and Disinformation will always appear in society, but with the emergence of social media that makes news spread quickly, easily and can reach a large number of people, the impact of fake news is inevitably increasing as well. which all information, details of fake news have not been verified, there is no exact origin neither the journalist nor the news agency published it. spreading fake news in these days is really easily. just have access to media outlets on all platforms. we will see many of news that flowing which has both real and fake mixed together. However, being aware the source of fake news will be able to distinguish that we believe what we see or find out for information thoroughly whether what we see is true or the story is composed.

Reaction: After reading this article I felt that we should be more aware of fake news than before. creating fake news to deceive, trick others is simply and increasing day by day. we have to be conscious of how to handle with and solve with these problems. from the examples in this article, we can see that there are people who are affected by fake news. it cause them very affected, whether it affects to their  life, property, social reputation and lead to arrest all of these was done by fake news. Nowadays, with the Internet, everyone can be both a recipient and a producer of written information. receiving and sharing posts, in addition to having truthful information and useful information, there are contents that are only personal opinions, persuasive, propaganda, content aimed at attacking opponents. create various misunderstandings information both true and false, difficult to verify or find the source. Therefore, we must check thoroughly before believing, sharing, finding the exact source of information so as not to fall victim to fake news.

Question: How can we have an effective way to combat with fake news? In the future, there will be a new fake news generating strategy how will be able to recognize it and how we deal with it? Should we target the victims? conduct a questionnaire to see which groups of people are the most victimized?
